BROKENLAUNDRETTE

Press room / all loads reserved

A clean set of dirty-laundry facts.

Broken Laundrette is an independent, unofficial parody and critical field guide to Matthew Gray’s Broken Mile trilogy, its public presentation and the art-historical company it keeps.

01 / Press note

Three miles. One spin cycle.

Broken Laundrette is an unofficial online parody that puts Matthew Gray’s three-mile West Texas sculpture project through an art-historical wash. The expanded site pairs its original photo-essay satire with three new source-linked field guides: Walter De Maria’s exacting Broken Kilometer converted to imperial, the mythic mathematics of trilogies, and a browser-level audit of the Gray Creates portfolio. A new Living Art profile provides a timely fourth load: heroic labor, anti-gallery rhetoric and public access at a decidedly remote address. The result is affectionate but unsparing criticism—part catalogue essay, part care label, and entirely unaffiliated with the artists, photographers and institutions discussed.

03 / The fresh hook

A new film supplies its own legend.

Living Art published a four-minute Matthew Gray profile on September 24, 2026. Gray presents the Broken Mile project as solitary, self-funded labor beyond the gallery system and describes three permanent works, each containing one exact mile of aluminum.

Broken Laundrette’s response focuses on the productive tension between anti-market language and polished publicity, between “for the people” and a deliberately remote site, and between a refusal of mediation and a film built to mediate.

04 / Use & attribution

Quote the joke. Keep the caveat.

Broken Laundrette’s campaign graphics may be shared with a link back to the relevant page. Please identify the project as “unofficial, unaffiliated parody and criticism.” Do not describe its jokes as factual reporting, imply participation by any artist or institution, or detach public-source claims from their attribution.

Reyvik photographs on the original-load page remain externally hosted and credited to Reyvik. They are not included in this press kit. Campaign material uses original typographic artwork only.

The site discusses public work, public statements and published presentation. It does not invite trespass, independently verify engineering or access claims, or make claims about private life.
